Well, I’m old. It’s official. Instead of going out drinking and partying, I stayed in and worked around the Retreat. But it’s SPRING! How could I pass up the opportunity to spend time outside? It was nearly 70 degrees! I love spring! Today I saw the first sprouts in the flower bed. I saw my first robin. I saw the first fish in the pond. The only thing better than that will be the first tomatoes of the year.
GunBunny (the wife) and I put hundreds of seeds in the ground today. Three dozen of them were put into those crappy, plastic seed starters. We started three pots of herbs. Two pots were seeded with flowers. And we did two window boxes. One has flowers and one has leaf lettuce! I might be eating home-grown salad Memorial Day weekend! We even did one of the beds outside. We’ll see how that goes.
There is a task that is kicking my ass though. We bought this property about a year ago. We had a ton of reasons to love the property. Not the least of them were apple trees and grapes. The problem is that none of them have been pruned in two decades. So take one part crazy trees and vines and one part idiot city boy. What you get is a mess. As long as everything gets through this year, I’ll be happy. I just want to get it all under control. I will worry about fruit production next year.
I have to rant about the grapes a little more. There are trees 10-12 feet tall where the grapes are. The vines have completely engulfed these poor trees. I’m going to have to cut it all of down. Hopefully that much cut back won’t kill the grapes.
I’m doing more tomorrow. Hopefully, I’ll remember the camera this time.
