I was watching Lost today. Came to a very simple solution that just about every survival type situation involves walking. Maybe you will need to get home even though the road is blocked. Maybe you will be safely at home but want to go to the neighbors to see how they are and what is going on but don't want to burn the gas. If nothing else just doing day to day stuff without ready access to cheap fuel would change things a lot.

I preach physical fitness and I imagine a disturbing percentage of readers ignore me. Maybe being able to run and lift heavy stuff is not something you can see the importance of. However I do think we can all see the wisdom of being able to walk.

Of course being able to walk all day long at a rate of 20 minutes a mile carrying an 80 pound pack would be nice. Realistically if you can walk 4-5 miles with say a 20 pound day pack and not be useless when you get there it would be a darn good start.

http://www.ltspecpro.com/july-4th-sale.html
I particularly like the Short Bowie machete as a weapon/GP tool, the Spear point looks good too. I only have the Bowie one that I posted about, I'd love to have an extra one (specially at that price) or a spear point one. 8 bucks for that Spear point? I'd get at least a couple.

This is the one I recommend, Spear Point 12" machete. Excellent knife. Heck, buy two and sell one to me, I'd gladly pay a few extra bucks over retail for your trouble. :-)

Anyway, thought I'd pass the word. I have no affiliation as I have with the Amazon products which helps with a small %, but those are terrific prices for those preparing with a tight budget.

Like I said in the last post I conducted my first real world bug-out scenario due to the heightened security risks that were prevelant at the apartment I was renting. Here are some of the ancedotal "Lessons Learned" that I picked up from our unexpected departure.

Keep your ear to the ground and maintain a constant watch. Know what's going on in your immediete neck of the woods.

Expand your knowledge concerning potential threats from gangs, criminals, etc. Know how the enemy dresses, talks, walks. Figure out their modus operandi. Learn to "read" graffiti. Graffiti is considered to be a newspaper for the street. By being able to translate it, you will have actionable intellegence on which you can base your decisions.

Constantly work to lower your profile. Work to blend into your environment. Do nothing to cause yourself to stand out. The more you stand out, the more the criminal element will become aware of your presence.

Always have a Bug-out bag packed and sitting by the door. Routinely inspect it and change its contents according to the seasons. We lost valuable time when we had to dump the winter stuff.

Practice bugging out beforehand. Identify those items that your family members must have with them, in case you never come back. From the time I said, "let's go, we're out of here," to the time we actually left the building was almost 30 minutes. In a crisis, this would be unacceptable.

Have supplies pre-positioned in your bug out vehicle so that all you have to worry about is grabbing your bag and leaving.

If you can return for the rest of your stuff make sure you acquire a truck big enough to make it in one trip.

Maintain 100% security during periods of concern and never surrender your 2nd amendment rights. If I was unarmed and had to rely on the Police for protection I would've been up the proverbial creek without the paddle. With response times pushing 20-30 minutes, all hope would have been lost.

Always project strength. Most bad guys prey on the weak. They will often let someone pass them by if it appears that they would have to fight to get what they want. This is not always the case but by projecting strenth you dramatically decrease the odds of an attack.

Show respect to those around you, even if you don't feel like it. Gangs will often retailiate when they feel that they have been slighted. Do nothing to provoke them but be ready to respond if you do.

Avoid problem areas like the plague.

As always I welcome your input. If you can think of anything that would help smooth out a bug-out, please share!
